MSFHR is pleased to
announce that the Government of BC has confirmed a further $15 million in funding
for the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research. This funding is in
addition to the $15 million announced for the Foundation in the February 2009
provincial budget. The Foundation recognizes that in a period of economic
downturn, this funding signals the government’s ongoing commitment to health

BCNAR Launches New Website
BCNAR is pleased to announce the launch of its
new website, designed to give a more user-friendly experience. The redesigned site
includes elements aimed at augmenting communication and usability. With a fresh
look and feel it has been organized with the emphasis on improved navigation; a
new events calendar and pages dedicated to support researchers and students;
web tools that enable website visitors to change text size and print clean text

bids a fond farewell to Elaine Gallagher, co-leader, BCNAR. Dr. Gallagher’s
term as Director at the Centre on Aging has come to an end and she will
therefore be stepping aside as a member of the BCNAR executive committee.Elaine’s dedication and contribution does not
go unnoticed and we offer a huge thanks to Elaine for everything that she has
contributed. In
the same breath we couldn’t be happier announce that Dr. Holly Tuokko will take
on the role of Director at the Centre on Aging and Co Leader of BCNAR. We look forward to the knowledge, dedication
and commitment that Holly brings to the network. Check out our feature of Dr.

BCNAR hosted its Fourth Annual Conference and AGM April 3rd
The
conference provided a forum for researchers, community groups and key
stakeholders interested in evaluation research on health and aging programs.
Participants discussed successful and challenging experiences related to health
and aging program evaluation frameworks, models, design, implementation, and

The AGM gave an opportunity to provide members an overview of the
success of BCNAR in the past year along with future events, projects and

STAR Workshop 2009 Was A Great Success!
Earlier this year BCNAR hosted
its first Student Training in Aging Research (STAR) workshop in Parksville, BC.
This intensive two-day workshop was offered to graduate students and post-docs
involved in aging research throughout BC; with the purpose of developing
specific research skills and offering the opportunity to network with peers and

The Vancouver Initiative to Add Life to Years (VITALiTY)
The Vancouver Initiative to Add Life to Years
(VITALiTY), the result of a 2006 BCNAR Team Seed Grant (PI Dr Janet McElhaney)
hosted a one-day invited Workshop January 12 2009. The purpose
of the Workshop was to bring together key researchers and health care
professionals in the fields of aging, mobility, cognition, and health to
identify research priorities and potential research collaborations. The
day was a huge success, and a summary report will be available soon. Stay

Fourth Annual Interior Health Research Conference
Aging was a hot topic this year at part one of
the 4th Annual Interior Health Research Conference that took place
March 27th in Kelowna, BC. Interior Health worked in collaboration
with BCNAR and 5 other research networks to organize the highly anticipated
event entitled “Knowledge Translation in Aging, Chronic Disease Management, and

UVic Forum Looks at What it Takes to be a Healthy, Happy Senior
On April 16, a public
forum was hosted by the University of Victoria’s Centre on Aging. Experts
discussed the latest research in the field of aging including caregiving,
exercise and the brain, seniors’ medication use, and the identification of
age-friendly communities. The forum was held at the Qualicum Beach Civic

Affordable Housing For Seniors
On May 8, BCNAPHA, BCNAR, SPARC BC and Senior Services Society (funding provided by CIHR-IA)n hosted affordable housing for seniors: collaboratign to create a research agenda & action plan, a one-day workshopto
develop a research agenda and action plan that works towards housing that is
appropriate and affordable for an aging population in BC. Read more.

Hearing Health Fair 2009
The Hearing Health Fair will take place on May 13th between 9am to 4pm at SFU Harbour Centre. Through this fair, participants will
learn about hearing and hearing loss, as well as what services and options are
available. Fully accessible with
captioners and sign language interpreters, this fair also provides an
opportunity for Audiologists, Researchers and the public to network and share
ideas. Presented by the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard
of Hearing (WIDHH), BCNAR and UBC’s School of Audiology and Speech Science this

UVic Centre on Aging Event Showcase Research
The biennial Research Showcase “New Perspectives from
Research on Healthy Aging: Implications for Policy and Practice” will take
place June 18.
It is an opportunity for participants to hear first-hand, the
important work being undertaken by researchers and students at UVic. The event
seeks to also generate ideas for new research and provide ideas and insights
for students, researchers, practitioners and policy makers in the field of
